Tropical Plant "Cortica"
Rollinia sericea
Characteristics - Rollinia sericea is a fruit tree not yet under cultivation but abundant in its natural habitat, the Atlantic Forest from Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina, mainly on the slopes of the Atlantic range in Parana and Santa Catarina states. It is evergreen, 5-15 m tall. Leaves are papyraceous, 9-16 cm long, almost glabrous on the upper surface and pubescent underneath. Flowers are solitary or in groups of 2-3, axillary and extra-axillary, forming mainly from September to November. The fruit is syncarp, containing a small amount of sweet, succuculent pulp with seeds scattered throughout. Fruits ripen from December to February.
Uses - The fruits are consumed 'au nature!' and though they are tasty, they are not widely appreciated because of the large number of seeds they contain.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
