Tropical Plant "Pindaiba"
Duguetia lanceolata
Characteristics - The pindaiba is a fruit bearer, not yet under cultivation, and is of frequent occurence in its natural habitat; it is native to Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul south to Rio Grande do Sul, in the sandy soils of the Atlantic Forest and in the semi-deciduous forest of the Parana River Basin. It is an evergreen tree, 15-20 m tall. Leaves are glabrous on both surfaces, subcoriaceous, 8-12 cm long. Flowers androgynous, axillary, form in October-November. Fruits compound (syncarp), with a tubcrculated surface, with sharp arestae, a succulent pulp, with a sweet flavor; they ripen from January to March.
Uses - The fruits have a pleasant flavor and are consumed only in natura.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds, growth is very slow.
