Tropical Plant "Beach sugar apple"
Annona salzmannii

Characteristics - The beach sugar apple is a fruit bearer, not under cultivation, rare in nature, in its natural habitat, the "restingas" (forest covered sand dunes) and in the coastal Forest Zone, of northeastern Brazil. It is an evergreen tree, 12-15 m tall, (one of the tallest of its type), with an almost smooth trunk, the new shoots (branches) are ferruginous-tomentose. Leaves simple, thick, coriaceous, glabrous on both surfaces, dark green and lustrous on the superior surface, a paler green on the inferior, 9-12 cm long, with the margins turned under. Flowers solitary or in pairs, extra axillary, androgynous and carnose, form from September to November. Fruits of the syncarp type, globose or cordate, weigh up to 500 g, with an almost smooth surface, yellowish-green, a succulent pulp, sweet and fiberless, 70-80 seeds, ripen from November to January.

Uses - The fruits are consumed only in their natural state and are greatly appreciated.

Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
