Tropical Plant "Pond apple"
Annona glabra
Characteristics - The pond apple is a fruit tree, not under cultivation and of frequent occurence in nature; native to nearly all of the Brazilian coast (Amapa to Sant Catarina) in swampy areas near the mangroves and lagoons. It is an evergreen tree, 3-6 m tall with the trunk thicker at the base. Leaves sucoria-ceous of variable size, completely glabrous on both surfaces. Flowers solitary, androgynous, form from November to January. Fruits are compound with a fibrous, succulent, slightly sweet pulp and a strong aroma. They ripen from January through March.
Uses -The fruits are consumed 'au nature!' in juices but are not much appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
