Tropical Plant "Imbu"
Spondias tuberosa
Characteristics -The imbu is a fruit tree, native to the semi-arid region of the northeast. Found in the scrublands from Ceara to the northern part of Minas Gerais, it is of frequent occurence in nature and is cultivated in domestic orchards. A deciduous tree, 4-7 m tall, with a short trunk and a low, wide crown. Leaves compound pinnate with 3-7 membranaceous leaflets. The vascular system has reserve organs for storing water. Inflorescences in terminal panicle, wide, with bisexual white, flowers, form shortly before the first rains when the tree is still leafless (the months of September-December). Fruits globose or ovoid, the pulp is succulent and fiberless, with a sweet acidic flavor. They ripen in January and February.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state (out of hand, juices) and are widely commercialized in the street markets.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds or easily rooted from cuttings.
