Tropical Plant "Spanish cherry"
Minusops commersonii
Characteristics – The Spanish cherry is a tropical fruit bearer, originally from Madagascar, widely cultivated, as a part of the urban aboriculture, in coastal towns and occasionally in the domestic orchards of northeast and southeast Brazil. It is evergreen tree, lactiferous, 7-10 m tall, very tolerant of saline soils. Leaves coriaceous, glabrous, lighter green on the inferior surface, 5-15 cm long, with a petiole of about 3 cm. Flowers solitary or in groups of 2-4, on axillary fascicles, form from July to September. The fruits are globose berries, with a smooth skin, the pulp is creamy and sweet, with 1-2 seeds; they mature in the summer.
Uses - The fruits are consumed exclusively in natura (fresh) and not widely appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
