Tropical Plant "Red raspberry"
Rubus idaeus

Characteristics - The red raspberry is a temperate fruit bearer, native to North America, Asia and Europe, and cultivated in the highlands of southern Brazil. It is a deciduous shrub, spinescent with scandent branches, less than 2 m tall, it needs annual pruning and about 600 hours of cold temperatures (<7.2C) per year, to produce well. Leaves compound, 3-5 pinnate, with chartaceous leaflets, glabrous on the upper surface, and dense, white tomentose on the inferior, 5-12 cm long. Flowers androgynous, arranged on axillary racemes, form from September to November. The fruit is of the aggregate type, globose, hollow, carnose with a slightly sweet flavor; ripening occurs during the summer.

Uses - The fruits are consumed in natura (fresh) and in the form of jellies.

Propagation - Propagated by basal shoots.
