Tropical Plant "Quince"
Cydonia oblonga
Characteristics - The quince is an exotic fruit bearer, native to southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, where it has been cultivated for more than 4000 years. It is widely cultivated in Brazil, mainly in domestic orchards in the southern part of the country. It is a small deciduous tree, 3-6 m tall. Leaves chartaceous, green on the upper surface and white-tomentose on the inferior surface, 5-10 cm long. Flowers solitary, terminal, large and white, form from August to December. Fruits piriform or globose, aromatic, covered in tomenta that releases easily on contact, a persistent calyx, the pulp is firm, with an acidic, astringent flavor; they ripen in the autumn.
Uses - The fruits can be consumed in natura as juice, more frequently, they are made into sweets and jellies.
Propagation - Propagated by stem cuttings.
