Tropical Plant "Water apple"
Syzygium aqueum
Characteristics - The water apple in an exotic fruit bearer, not widely cultivated in Brazil, it originated in India and is commercially cultivated in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. It is an evergreen tree, with a small crown, 3-8 m tall, with a short, somewhat twisted, trunk. Leaves simple, coriaceous, lustrous above, glabrous on both surfaces, 7-11 cm long, with a proeminent main nerve and a petiole of 2-4 mm. Flowers white, fragrant, long and numerous stamens make up most of their volume; they are arranged in axillary racemes with few pedicilated flowers, they form in May-June. The fruits are piriform, the color of water, with a succulent, aromatic pulp, that has a slightly sweet and refreshing flavor; they contain a single seed and mature in January-February.
Uses - The fruits are consumed mainly in natura but are not widely appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
