Tropical Plant "White mulberry"
Morus alba
Characteristics - The white mulberry is an exotic fruit bearer, originally from China, occasionally cultivated in southern Brazil. It is a deciduous tree, monoecious or dioecious, 6-12 m tall. Leaves simple, chartaceous, glabrous on both surfaces, the margins are variable, deeply lobed on young plants and coarsely serrated when mature, with a petiole of 1-3 cm that exudes a light latex, when cut. Flowers are unisexual, forming in September-October along with the development of the new foliage, the males in dense aments (spikes) of 1-3 cm long and the females in shorter spikes. The fruits are compound drupes (infructescences) with a succulent texture, and very sweet, pleasant flavor; they ripen during the summer.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in natura or can be used in the confeccion of sweets.
Propagation - Propagated by stem cuttings.
