Tropical Plant "Lakoocha"
Artocarpus lakoocha
Characteristics - The lakoocha is an exotic fruit bearer, originally from the humid, sub-Himalayan regions of India. It was introduced to Brazil very recently and, at the present time, is only known by collectors. It is a deciduous tree, monoecious, 6-9 m tall. Leaves are coriaceous, lustrous on the upper surface andpubescent on the inferior surface, 12-20 cm long. Inflorescences unisexual, form from September to December, the males in yellow-orange spikes, the females in red globose spikes. Fruits are compound syncarps, ripening from March to May; their shape is round or irregular, with a velvety surface. The pulp is dark-yellow, fibro-carnose with an acidic-sweet flavor, not too pleasant, wrapped around a few seeds.
