Tropical Plant "Pecan"
Carya illinoinensis

Characteristics - The pacan is an exotic fruit bearer, cultivated in domestic orchards and on commercial plantations in the south and southereastern regions of Brazil, where it was introduced around 1910. It originated in the United States, where it can be found in its native form. It is a deciduous tree, 15-25 m tall. Leaves are simple, chartaceous, from 10-18 cm long. Flowers are unisexual, forming from August – October, male flowers form on the previous year’s growth and the females on the apices of new branches. The fruit matures and drops in the autumn, already free of the exocarp, with the seed (nut) protected by a shell.

Uses - The seeds (nuts) are consumed in natura, also in cakes, pies and sweets.

Propagation - Propagated by seeds, however grafting can make the plants more precocious.
