Tropical Plant "Odoriferous melon"
Cucumis melo
Characteristics - The odoriferous melon is a fruit bearer, not much cultivated in Brazil, found mainly in the southern region; it originated in Europe and southeast Africa. It is an annual, herbaceous with a creeping habit and sarmetose stems. Leaves memvranaceous, hirsute-pubescent, variably lobed, 10-18 cm long. Flowers are solitary, unisexual on the same plant. Fruits are berries, globose or ellipsoid, with shallow or deep furrows on the surface, and aromatic, thick pulp, slightly sweet, the color may vary from orange to salmon. They are not widely cultivated because of their reduced post-harvest durability and low tolerance to being shipped.
Uses - The fruits are consumed, exclusively in natura and are greatly appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seed.
