Tropical Plant "Pineapple cactus"
Selenicereus setaceus
Characteristics - The pineapple cactus is a succulent, epiphytic shrub, originally from Bolivia and Paraguay, its cultivation in Brazil has just begun. Phylloclades (photosynthesizing green branches), trialate, 6-7 cm wide, with little branching, support and attach themselves with aerial roots, they have areoles on the edges, spaced 5-6 cm apart, each with 3-4 short, rigid spines that thicken at their bases. Flowers solitary, nocturnal, androgynous, attached directly to the phylloclades, form during the spring. The fruits ripen in the summer, the are ellipsoid or globose berries without spines, red, pink or yellow, with a farinaceous, succulent, white pulp that has a sweet and pleasant flavor.
Uses - The fruits are consumed only in natura and at the moment, are not offered in markets.
Propagation - Propagated by cuttings.
