Tropical Plant "Purple mombin"
Spondias purpurea
Characteristics -The purple mombin is an exotic fruit bearer, originally from Central America, and now widely cultivated in domestic orchards, in all the tropical regions of the country, but mainly in the north and northeast. It is a small tree, deciduous, 3-6 m tall. Leaves pinnately compound, 18-24 cm long with 9-11 pairs of membranous, somewhat aromatic leaflets, around 2.5 cm long. Flowers are discreet, unixesual (male and female) and androgynous on the same plant, forming during the spring, along with the budding of the new foliage. Fruits of the drupe type, have an edible pulp with a very pleasant, acidic-sweet flavor.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in natura, and are being commercialized in many regions of the country.
Propagation - Easily propagated with seeds or with stem cuttings.
