Tropical Plant "Cocona"
Solanum sessiliflorum
Characteristics - The cocona is a fruit bearer, seldom cultivated, and found in the wild in its natural habitat, the western Amazon region of Brazil. It is an herbaceous, semiperennial with a woody base, erect, thorny, branched, from 1-2 m tall, preferring partial shade when young. Leaves simple, membranaceous, bicolored, densely pubescent on both surfaces, 30-60 cm long, with a 10-14 cm petiole. Flowers sessile, in groups of 5-8, on short, axillary racemes, form 5-6 months after being planted. The fruits are berries, pubescent, the shape, color and size varies, weight may reach 400g; they have a suculent pulp, an acidic flavored, with many small seeds; ripening befins 50-60 days after blooming.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state, in the form of juices.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
