Tropical Plant "Saguaraji"
Saguaraji
Characteristics - Saguaraji is a fruit tree not under cultivation, it is frequent in nature in its natural habitat, the Atlantic rain forest from Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Sul and in the high-altitude semi-deciduous forest and the forests of the Parana River basin in Minas Gerais, Goias, Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Parana. It is a deciduous tree, 8-16 m tall, the trunk covered in suberose, vertically fissured bark. Leaves are chartaceous, glabrous, 6-12 cm long, nerves impressed on the upper surface and salient underneath, with a 1cm petiole. Flowers inconspicuous, gathered in axillary glomerules form in Oct. – Nov. Fruits have a thin, juicy pulp with a sweet, pleasant flavor; contain one seed, they ripen in Dec-Jan.
Uses - The fruits are consumed only in their natural state and are not widely appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
