Tropical Plant "Maracuja-do-mato"
Passiflora galbana
Characteristics - The passiflora galbana is not a cultivated fruit bearer, however, it is abundant in its natural habitat, in the states of Bahia, Espirito Santo, Goias, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, along the edge of the forest and brushy areas and on the littoral levees. It is a very vigorous, herbaceous climber, completely glabrous, with a striated, cylindrical caulis, membranaceous stipules, about 1.4 cm long. Leaves simple, membranaceous, lustrous, 8-12 cm long, a petiole of 1.0-2.5 cm, with two stipitated glands, on its midsection. Flowers solitary, 8-9 cm in diameter, with a peduncle of 4-10 cm, the corona is made of two sets of filaments; they form almost year round. Fruits are berries, with a acidic, succulent pulp, they mature mainly in the summer.
Uses - The fruits are consumed only in natura, mainly in the form of juice.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
