Tropical Plant "Red granadilla"
Passiflora coccinea
Characteristics - The red granadilla is a fruit bearer, cultivated as an ornamental and is abundant in its natural habitat, the edges of the forests and brushy areas throughout the Amazon region. It is an herbaceous perennial, climber (with tendrils), pubescent, with a cylindrical, striated caulis, stipules linear-lanceolate, entire or micro-glandular-serrated, from 04.-1.5 cm long. Leaves entire, subcoriaceous, 6-14 cm long, with a 1.8-3.5 cm petiole, with 2 glands at the base. Flowers solitary, 8-12 cm in diameter, with 3 loose bracts having glandular-serrated margins and a robust peduncle, 3-9 cm long; they form from October to December; Fruits have a juicy, acidic-flavored pulp; ripening occurs from January to April.
Uses - The fruits are consumed only in their natural state as juice, but it is not widely appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
