Tropical Plant "Granadilla de monte"
Passifora ambigua
Characteristics - The granadilla de monte is not a cultivated fruit bearer, nor is it frequent in nature in its natural habitat, the dry land forests of the Amazon region, in the states of Amazonas, Para and Mato Grosso. It is an herbaceous semi-perennial, slightly robust, climber (with tendrils), glaborous (exept for the flowers), with a striate, cylindrical caulis; stipules setaceous, at times filiform, deciduous, 5-8 cm long. Leaves simple, coriaceous, lighter in color on the lower surface, 10-20 cm long, with a 2-4 cm petiole with 2 glands situated midway. Flowers solitary, axillary, very fragrant, 8-12 cm in diameter, form from December to February. Fruits have a juicy pulp, a sweet, pleasant flavor and a thick skin; they ripen from February to May.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state and are greatly appreciated locally.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
