Myrciaria tenella
Characteristics - The Myrciaria tenella is a fruit bearer, seldom cultivated in domestic orchards and relatively frequent in its natural habitat, the seasonal and the isolated forests, from Para, Maranhao and central Brazil to northeastern Rio Grande do Sul. It is a shrub or small semi-deciduous tree, densely branched, 1-5 m tall, with a characteristic, smooth trunk. Leaves are chartaceous, glabrous, bicolored, from 1.5-2.0 cm long, the central nerve is flat or sulcate above, salient underneath. Flowers axillary, arranged in pairs, sessile, white, form in July-August. Fruits are globose, smooth, a brilliant red or orange color, with a thick pulp, a pleasant, acidic-sweet flavor, with 1 seed; they ripen in September-October.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in natura and as jellies. The plant in used for bonsai.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
