Tropical Plant "Rumberry"
Myrciaria floribunda
Characteristics - The rumberry is a native fruit bearer, not cultivated in Brazil; it is occasionally planted in other countries. It is not very frequent in its natural habitat on the slopes of the Atlantic Forest and in high altitude forests from Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul. It is a semi-deciduous tree, 10-15 m tall, with a smooth and peeling bark. Leaves chartaceous, glabrous, bicolored, 5-8 cm long with the principal nerve flat, salient or sulcate on the adaxial face and salient on the abaxial, with 15-20 pairs of secondary nerves. Inflorescences in axillary fascicles or ramiflorous with 2-4 flowers, from in December and January. Fruits globose, with a thin pulp, succulent and acidic, ripening in July-October.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state and as sweets and jellies.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
