Tropical Plant "White Jaboticaba"
Myrciaria aureana
Characteristics - The white jaboticaba is a native fruit bearer, occasionally cultivated in domestic orchards, mainly in the southeast part of the country. Of unknown origin, it was described in 1976, from material cultivated in Sao Paulo. It is a small tree, semi-dciduous, 2-3 m tall, with a nodose trunk and peeling, yellowish bark. Leaves chartaceous, bullate, glabrous on the upper surface and sparsely pilose on the inferior, 6-11 cm long, with the main nerve impressed and pilose on the upper surface, salient and hirsute on the inferior. Flowers, agglomerated on the caulis and branches, with a 1-3 mm peduncle, form mainly in August – September; flower buds have sparse hairs. Fruits subglobose, slightly costate, yellowish-green with a succulent, sweet, pleasant tasting pulp; ripening occurs in October- November. Some botanists include all jaboticaba species in the genus Plinia.
Uses - The fruits are consumed mainly in their natural state and greatly appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
