Tropical Plant "Pera-do-campo"
Eugenia klotzshiana
Characteristics - The pera do campo is a fruit bearer, rarely cultivated in domestic orchards and not frequent in its natural habitat, the savannas (cerrados) and open fields of the Federal District (outside the capital, Brasilia), Goias, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is a deciduous shrub, 0.5 – 1.5 m tall, with recumbent or prostate limbs. Leaves simple, coriaceous, with dense, white pubescence when immature, 6-16 cm long with discreet nervation. Flowers androgynous, solitary, axillary, white and fragrant with a 2-4 cm peduncle, form in October – November. Fruits piriform, 60-90 g, with a thin, pubescent skin, a thick pulp, carnose-succulent, aromatic, with a very characteristics, acidic flavor, containing 1-3 loose seeds. They mature from December to January.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state or cooked up to make jellies, but they are not very well-known.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
