Tropical Plant "Copacabana guava"
Eugenia copacabanensis
Characteristics - The Copacabana guava is a fruit tree occasionally cultivated as an ornamental, mainly in the city of Rio de Janeiro; today, it is very rare in nature in its native habitat, the littoral levees (restingas) of Rio de Janeiro. It is an evergreen tree with a low dense crown, 4-7 m tall. Leaves are ovate-acuminate, chartaceous, glabrous on both surface, lustrous, slightly bicolored, 4-8 cm long. Immature leaves are re. Inflorescences axillary in groups of 3-7 pedicillated white flowers, from in January and February. Fruits are orange colored, globose or oblong with a thick orange pulp, carnose-succulent, with a sweetish, not very pleasant flavor. They contain two white seeds that separate easily from the pulp. Ripening occurs in October and November.
Uses - The fruit are consumed exclusively in their natural state and are not greatly appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
