Tropical Plant "Savanna cherry"
Eugenia calycina
Characteristics - The savanna cherry is not a cultivated fruit tree, nor is if frequent in nature in its native habitat, the savannas (cerrados) and fields of central Brazil, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is a deciduous shrub, less than 2 m tall. Leaves are simple, lanceo-late, subcoriaceous, glabrous on both surfaces, slightly bicolored, 3-6 cm long. Flowers are solitary, axillary, with white form in August and September. Furits are ellipsoid, red and shiny, crowned by persistent, long, yellowish-white sepals. They have a thick pulp, very succulent, soft with a pleasant, sweet flavor. They nature from October to December, and contain one or two white seeds that separate easily from the pulp.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state and in the form of jellies and sweet confections that are greatly appreciated in the local area.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
