Tropical Plant "Gabiroba"
Campomanesia xanthocarpa

Characteristics - The gabiroba is a fruit tree cultivated in domestic orchards, mainly in the south and southeast party of the country. It is easily found in its natural habitat, from Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul to Rio Grande do Sul, in almost all the types of forest in the region. It is a semi-deciduous tree, 4-15 m tall. It differs from the others in that the leaves are fully developed when flowering occurs and they generally have a tuft of hairs, at the axiles of the main nerves, on the inferior side. It has glabrous peduncles, longer than the flowers and lobes of the oblong-obovate calyx. Flowers are single, forming from September to November. Fruits have a succulent, firm, sweet pulp. They mature in November – December.

Uses - Fruits are consumed only in their natural state and are greatly appreciated locally.

Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
