Tropical Plant "Jabuticaba-de-cipo"
Chondodendron platyphyllum
Characteristics - Chondodendron platyphyllum is not a cultivated fruit tree nor is it requent in its natural habitat, the scrublands and the rocky, sandy areas from the southern part of Para, northeast and central Brazil to Minas Gerais. It is a semi-deciduous tree, 4-8 m tall with a sparse crown. Leaves are subcoriaceous, 3-6 cm long with almost invisible lateral nerves. Flowers are white and fragrant, arranged in small clusters along the woody branches in areas where leaves are not present, even on the main trunk. They form between July and September. The fruits ripen from March to June. They are globose or oblong berries with a thin skin. They contain 1-4 seeds wrapped in a succulent, sweet, pleasant tasting pulp.
Uses - The fruits are consumed only in their natural state and greatly enjoyed by the local population.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
