Tropical Plant "Cupui"
Theobroma subincanum
Characteristics - The Theobroma subincanum is a rarely cultivated fruit bearer, easily found in its natural habitat, throughout the Amazon region, usually in the high land forests, along the damp shores of the “igapos” (river channels). It is an evergreen tree, 10-16 m tall. Leaves coriaceous, glabrous on the superior surface, 20-30 cm long, with 7-10 pairs of very salient nerves, on the inferior surface. Flowers solitary or in groups 2-3, axillary or extra-axillary, form in October – November. Fruits, berry type ellipsoids, with a hard, breakable exocarp (skin), contain a small amount of sweet, succulent pulp; they mature from February to April.
Uses - Frits consumed in natura, as juices, and greatly enjoyed, they are sold in the street markets in the northern region.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
