Bromelia antiacantha
Characteristics – Bromelia antiacantha is a fruit bearer, not under cultivation, though abundant in its natural habitat, in he littoral belt, from the states of Espirio Santo to Rio Grande do Sul, in the forests, as well as in the ‘restingas’ (forest covered sand dunes), secondary growth and open pasture land. It’s an ascaulescent, herbaceous plant, with foliage in the form of a rosette, without forming a cistern, up to 2 m tall. Leaves erect, channeled, glabrous with spines on the margins, more than 1m long. Inflorescences, rise from the center of the rosette, white-hirsute, composed of up to 7 distinct floral branches, form in the spring. The fruits are subglobose berries, with a succulent pulp and an acidic flavor.
Uses – The fruits are consumed in the natura, but more often as jellies.
Propagation – Propagated by seeds and basal sprouts.
