Tropical Plant "Robust queen palm"
Syagrus romanzoffiana
Characteristics – The robust queen palm is widely cultivated as an ornamental. Native to southern Bahia, Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais and from Goias to Rio Grande do Sul and Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Atlantic Forest, Pine (Araucaria) Forest, gallery forests and semi-deciduous forests. It is a solitary palm 7-15 m tall with a diameter of 35-50 cm. Leaves pinnate, with 150-250 pairs of pinnae, irregularly distributed, in groups of 2-7, and arranged on different planes. Inflorescences interfoliar up to 1.5 m long. Fruits have a fibro-succulent mesocarp and a sweet and pleasant flavor.
Uses – The fruits, mainly the mesocarp, are consumed in their natural state.
Propagation – Propagated by seeds.
