Tropical Plant "Araticum-do-mato"

Characteristics – The aracticum do mato is a fruit tree rarely cultivated but relatively frequent in it natural habitat, the Atlantic Forest, the semi-decidouos forest, the high forest, the coastal sandy areas (restingas) in the states of Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Sul, also Minas Gerais, Goias and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is evergreen, 6-8 m tall. It is particularly frequent at higher altitudes. Leaves are papyraceous, bifacial, tomentose on both surfaces, 8-12 cm long. Flowers extra-axillary, solitary or in groups of 2-3 forming in September-October. Fruits are syncarp berries with sweet succulent pulp with many seeds. They ripen from January to April.
Uses – The fruits are consumed ‘au naturel’ but are not too popular due to the large quantity of seeds.
Propagation – Propagated by seeds.
