Tropical Plant "Governor's plum"
Flacourtia indica
Characteristics - The Governor's plum is a tropical fruit bearer, native to tropical Africa, Madagascar, India and Southeast Asia, Malaysia and the Philippines; a more or less recent introduction to Brazil, it is already being cultivated, in the domestic orchards, of the southeast. It is a small, evergreen tree, dioecious, spinescent, 3-6 m tall. Leaves simple, glabrous, brilliant green on the upper surface, 3-5 cm long. Flowers whitish, axillary, solitary or in pairs, form from September to November. The fruits are round berries, the skin is thin and lustrous, the color initially red, turning dark purple when completely ripe, the pulp is succulent with an acidic-sweet flavor, somewhat astringent, with many seeds; they mature from December to February.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state, as well as being made into jellies.
Propagation - seeds, grafting or stem cuttings.
