Tropical Plant "Orangelo"
Citrus sinensis
Characteristics - The orangelo is an exotic fruit bearer that originated from an accidental or deliberate cross between a sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and a grapefruit (Citrus Xparadisi); many of this type of cross, have been made, but the only one that resulted in a valuable plant, up to now, was accidental and is called the 'Chironja' cultivar (photos on this page); its cultivation in Brazil is still experimental. It is a small evergreen tree, spinescent, 3-6 m tall. Leaves chartaceous, glabrous, generally deformed, 6-9 cm long. Flowers axillary, solitary or grouped, form from October to December. Fruits, rounded or piriform, with a mammila at the apex, their skin is easily removeable, the pulp has 9-13 segments, the flavor is slightly acidic, and bitter, with 7-15 seeds; they mature in the autumn.
Uses - The fruits are consumed mainly in natura, fresh or as juice.
Propagation - Propagated by grafting.
