Prunus salicina
Characteristics - The Japanese plum is a fruit bearer originally from China, introduced into Brazil in the last century, today it is widely cultivated, mainly on the Southern Plateau. Leaves chartaceous, 4-7 cm long. Flowers solitary, androgynous, form in July-August; although they are auto-compatible, they need a pollinating cultivar planted with them, for good fruit production. The fruits are drupes, red, yellow or pink depending upon the cultivar, with a succulent pulp, yellow or red, with an acidic flavor, they mature in the summer.
Uses - The fruits are consumed mainly in their natural state and widely appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by grafting.
