Tropical Plant "Strawberry"
Fragaria X ananassa
Caracterisricas -The strawberry is a hybrid that originated from an accidental cross, that occured in Europe in 1750, between the Chilean strawberry (Fragaria Chiloensis)and the American strawberry (Fragaria virginiana). Its commercial cultivation in Brazil, began in 1960, with the launching of the 'Campinas' cultivar (photos on this page). It is an herbaceous perennial, prostrate, stoloniferous. Leaves are trifoliate with glabrescent leaflets. Flowers androgynous, self-fertilizing, from 1.5 cm in diameter, gathered in racemose glomerules. Fruits of the aggregate type, globose or ovoid, formed by the fertilization of a multicarpellate flower, whose receptacle grows and becomes a spongy mass, the edible part. Uses - The fruits are consumed in natura and greatly appreciated also made into jellies.
Propagation - Propagated with stolons.
