Tropical Plant "Lilly pilly"
Acmena smithii
Characteristics - The lilly pilly is an exotic fruit bearer, seldom cultivated in Brazil, having been recently introduced from Australia, where it occurs, in its wild form, in the humid, subtropical forests, in the state of Queensland. It is a semi-deciduous tree, 4-18 m tall, with an elongated crown; it is capable of tolerating winter in southern Brazil, producing fruit well, in both sun and partial shade. Leaves chartaceous, glabrous on both surfaces, lustrous above, 3-7 cm long, with a petiole of less than 1 cm. Flowers solitary or in small axillary racemes, with long peduncles, whose white stamens make up the major part of its volume, form from October to December. Fruits are round with a carnose white pulp and a slightly, sweet flavor, they mature in January-February.
Uses - The fruits are consumed mainly in their natural state and are not widely appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
