Tropical Plant "Marang"
Artocarpus odoratissima

Characteristics -The marang is an exotic fruit bearer of southeast Asian origin, mainly from Malaysia and the Philippines, recently introduced into Brazil and known almost exclusively by collectors of fruits. It is an evergreen, monoecious, 6-10 m tall. Leaves char-taceous, simple, entire or trilobed, asperous on the upper surface, with the nerves being ferruginous, 30-45 cm long. Inflorescences terminal and unisexual, form from September to November, the males in ellipsoidal spikes, the females in globose spikes. Fruits are of the syncarp type (compound) maturing from March to April; they have a succulent pulp, with a very pleasant, sweet and aromatic flavor; enveloping the 100-200 seeds.

Uses - The pulp, of the fruits, is consumed in natura, however, the seeds have the greatest potential value, when they are roasted, their flavor is similar to that of the chestnut.

Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
