Tropical Plant "Mamey apple"
Mammea americana
Characteristics - The mamey apple is an exotic fruit bearer that originated in the Antilles and northern South America. It is cultivated, mainly, in domestic orchards, in the Amazon region. It is an evergreen tree, 10-20 m tall, and it exudes a yellow latex. Leaves simple, coriaceous, glabrous and shiny. Flowers solitary or grouped on fascicles along the thin branches, with some plants only carrying male flowers and others with androgynous flowers; they form during the months of January-March. Fruits are large drupes, up to 1 kg in weight, with a thick and rugose skin, ripening mainly from June to December; they contain 1-4 seeds wrapped in a firm, somewhat fibrous pulp, with a slightly sweet flavor.
Uses - The fruits is consumed in their natural state, however freferably after being sliced and left to macerate in water for a few hours.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
