Tropical Plant "Marmelada-de-cachorro"
Cordiera sessilis
Characteristics - Cordiera sessilis is a fruit bearer, not under cultivation and relatively frequent in nature, native to almost all of Brazil. It is a bush or a large shrub, semi-deciduous, 2.5 -3.5 m tall, dimorphic, with many branches. Leaves chartaceous, glabrous on both surfaces, bicolored, shiny on the upper surface, 14-22 cm long. Flowers are white, females solitary, males in axillary glomerules (photo on right), they form in the spring. Fruits are globose berries, 3-5 cm in diameter, with a carnose pulp, a sweet flavor, covered by a thin skin and they contain many small seeds. They ripen during the summer.
Uses - The fruits are generally consumed in their natural state and are rarely commercialized. There are at least 12 other species, of this type , that exist in this country, with similar fruits.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
