Rubus erythrocladus

Characteristics - Rubus erythrocladus, a wild blackberry, is a fruit bearer, not under cultivation in Brazil, and not frequent in nature in its natural habitat, along the edges of forests and around forest "islands" in open areas (capao) from Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul. It is a deciduous shrub, spines-cent with scandent branches, 1.5-2.5m long, having glandular trichomes, both long and short. Leaves compound, 3-5 digitated, with leaflets vernicose, subcoriaceous, glabrous, from 5.5-10.5 cm long, with linear stipules of about 1 cm, a petiole of 3-7 cm and dense, erect and retrorse spines, 3-4 mm long. Flowers are white, gathered in terminal panicles forming at various times of the year, mainly in December. Fruits aggregate (compound) with the druplets carnose with a sweet, pleasant flavor; they ripen mainly in January-February.

Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state or made into jellies.
