Tropical Plant "Grape leaved passion fruit"
Passiflora vitifolia
Characteristics - The grape-leaved passion fruit is occasionally cultivated as an ornamental and is not very frequent in its natural habitat, along the edge of forests and brushy areas in the central Amazon region. It is an herbaceous perennial, many of its parts are puberulent or tomentose, a climber, with a cilindrical to sub-angular, striate caulis, stipules are linear, from 0.4-0.9 cm, with 2-3 glands on the base. Leaves trilobate, subcoriaceous, puberulent upper surface, tomentose inferior surface, 5-18 cm with a 0.8-6.3 cm petiole, with 2 glands on the base. Flowers solitary, 12-16 cm in diameter, bracts lanceolate and peduncles 3-9 cm, form Jul.-Sept. Fruits have a juicy pulp, an acidic flavor, and mature September to November.
Uses - The fruits are consumed only in their natural state, as juices but not appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
