Tropical Plant "Maracuja-bravo"
Passiflora giberti
Characteristics - Passiflora giberti is not a cultivated fruit bearer, however it is relatively frequent in nature in its natural habitat, in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Goias and Mato Grosso, along the edges of gallery forests and brushy (capoeiras) areas. It is a semi-perennial, herbaceous climber (with tendrils), entirely glabrous, with a cilindrical caulis, stipules are semiovate-lanceolate, mucronate at the apex, 2-3 cm long, attached laterally on the caulis. Leaves trilobate, mcmbranaceous, with 2 glands on the sinus, 5-7 cm long with a petiole of 1- 3 cm. that has 2-6 subclavate glands. Flowers solitary, fragrant, 6-8 cm in diameter with a 4-8 cm peduncle and the corona has 6 series of filaments; they form from December to February. Fruits have a juicy, sweet- flavored pulp and mature in February and March.
Uses - The fruits are consumed only in their natural state and not appreciated much.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
