Tropical Plant "Purple passion fruit"
Passiflora edulis
Characteristics - The purple passion fruit is a fruit bearer amply cultivated and also abundant in its natural habitat, the edges of the forests and brushy areas of almost all of the country. It is an herbaceous perennial, climber (with tendrils), normally glabrous with a cilindrical or subangular caulis; stipules linear-subulate, entire, 1.0-1.3 mm long. Leaves trilobate and trinervate, subcoriaceous, 5-14 cm long, with a 3-4 cm petiole, canaliculate above, with 2 glands situated near the foliar base. Flowers solitary, perfumed, diameter 5-7.5 cm, forming almost all year long. Fruits purple (forma tipi-ca), yellow (forma flavicarpd) or red (cultivars) with a juicy pulp and acidic flavor; the photos show the formas and cultivars.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state as juices and in desserts, are widely appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
