Tropical Plant "Dwarf guava"
Psidium guajava
Characteristics - The dwarf guava is a fruit tree occasionally cultivated in the southeastern region, its natural habitat is unknown since it has never been found in nature. It was described in 1976 using material cultivated in Campinas, SP. It is an evergreen tree, with a crooked, nodiferous trunk and branches, smooth, peeling bark, brownish in color, 3-5 m tall, new branches are slightly tetragonal and puberulent. Leaves coriaceous, glabrous on the upper surface, puberulent on the main nerve, on the inferior surface, 5-8 cm long and much narrower than the tipical forma of this species, the secondary nerves are parallel and very prominent. Flowers solitary, of a much smaller size than the commom guava, form in October-November. Fruits are globose, with a red, carnose pulp and a sweetish flavor.
Uses - Plant appropriate for bonsai; fruits consumed mainly in their natural state.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
