Tropical Plant "Frumixama-mirim"
Eugenia itaguahiensis
Characteristics - the Eugenia itaguahiensis is a fruit bearer seldom cultivated and rare in its natural habitat, the forested levees of the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is a large shrub or small tree evergreen, from 2-4 m tall. Leaves are ellipsoids, coriaceous, glabrous, dark green on top and whitish underneath, from 3-6 cm in length, a copper color when new. Flowers solitary, axillary, long-pedunculated, with petals and stamens initially white, then turning pink, form in September-October. The fruits are round berries, black and brilliant, crowned by long persistent sepals, with a carnose me-socarp (pulp), similar to the grumichama (E. brasiliensis), however a bit less sweet; they mature in September - October.
Uses - the fruits are consumed in natura and in the form of jellies. The plant is an appropriate size, for use as a pot plant or as a bonsai.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
