Tropical Plant "Feijoa"

Characteristics - The feijoa is not yet widely cultivated in Brazil, however it is well known in other sub-tropical countries. Its natural habitat is the Southern Plateau, in open areas of the countryside and in the pine forests. It is a small tree, semi-deciduous, 3-5 m tall. Leaves are simple, subcoriaceous, cinerous-whitc on the inferior surface, 4-6 cm long. Flowers are solitary or in groups of 3-5, androgynous, they form from September to November. The fruits ripen from January to March; they contain a succulent, sweet- flavored pulp with many soft seeds. Photos on this page are of 'Coolidge', a cultivar from Australian origin.
Uses - Fruits are consumed "au naturel" or made into sweets that arc greatly appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
