Tropical Plant "South American sapote"
Quararibea cordata
Characteristics - The South American sapote is a fruit tree, cultivated mainly in the Amazon region and in Peru. It is frequent in nature in its natural habitat, the seasonally flooded forests and dry land forests of the western part of the Amazon region. It is an evergreen tree, 15-30 m tall. Leaves are simple, subcoria-ceous, 30-40 cm long on the sterile branches and much longer on the flowering branches. Flowers are cauliferous, forming from September to November, axillary, solitary or in small groups. The fruits ripen from February to May. They are globose or oblong berries, green or brown in color when ripe, containing up to 5 seeds dispersed in a dense, somewhat fibrous and juicy pulp with a slightly sweet, pleasant flavor.
Uses - The fruits are consumed exclusively in their natural state and are greatly appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds, by stem cuttings or by grafting.
