Poraqueiba sericea
Characteristics - The umari is a fruit tree that is cultivated in the domestic orchards of the Amazon region and is easily found in its natural habitat, the dry land forests of the rain forest, mainly in the state of Amazonas. In Para (Lower Amazon) a very similar species occurs, Poraqueiba paraensis. It is an evergreen tree, 15-25 m tall. Leaves are simple, subcoriaceous, from 12-28 cm in length. Inflorescences in small axillary panicles, form from August to November with fragrant androgynous flowers. The fruits mature in the summer; they are ellipsoid drupes, aromatic, with a thin, carnose-oleaginous pulp that has a peculiar taste and aroma.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state, usually served with manioc flour and enjoyed, very much, by the people of the Amazon region. They are widely commercialized in the markets of the north.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
