Tropical Plant "Inga-cururu"
Inga laurina
Characteristics - Inga laurina is a fruit tree occasionally cultivated as an ornamental and commonly found in its natural habitat, various forest formations and the levees (restingas) in most parts of the country. It is an evergreen tree, 8-18 m tall. Leaves are even pinnately compound with 2-3 pairs of subsessile leaflets, 6-15 cm in length (terminal pair) and 3-8 cm (basal pair). Inflorescences are axillary with 1-3 spikes per axil with many flowers. They form from August to December. Fruits are legumes, indehiscent, glabrous with 5-15 seeds wrapped in floccose aril with a slightly sweet flavor that does not release easily.
Uses - The aril of the fruit is eaten only in its natural state and is not greatly appreciated.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
